SlingPlayer for Kindle Fire headed your way (hands-on)

The SlingPlayer for Kindle Fire was hiding amongst its siblings on the CES floor so of course we had to stop by and check it out. It fits right in the family of products, but the first version due to hit the AmazonAppstore this month for $29 will not include the guide or onscreen remote. You will of course be able to view the source's native guide and navigate via onscreen buttons, but the buttons just won't look like your source's remote. SlingMedia also confirmed for us that an additional subscription is not in the future (in case you were worried) and that an embeddable Flash player will be available soon so you can place shift your TV using any webpage you like.

Quote on King memorial that drew controversy to be changed (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? A truncated quote carved into a Washington memorial to slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. that drew criticism for not reflecting the spirit of his full remarks will be corrected, the Interior Department said on Friday.

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, speaking ahead of the national holiday on Monday in King's honor, said he had set a 30-day deadline for an accurate alternative to be found to the inscribed quotation: "I was a drum major for justice, peace and righteousness."

"This is important because Dr. King and his presence on the (National) Mall is a forever presence for the United States of America, and we have to make sure that we get it right," Salazar told the Washington Post in comments carried online.

A department spokesman confirmed his remarks.

The quote on the side of King's statue drew criticism even before President Barack Obama dedicated the memorial in October. King family members and admirers have contended that it was not accurate and gave the wrong impression.

Poet Maya Angelou said the inscription made King, who was assassinated in 1968, look like "an arrogant twit."

King's full quote from a 1968 sermon was, "If you want to say I was a drum major, say I was a drum major for justice, peace and righteousness."

The original plans had called for the full in-context quote, but it was edited after the plans were approved.

Salazar said he had given the National Park Service 30 days to consult with the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial Foundation, family members and other interested parties and come up with an accurate solution.

Spokesmen for the foundation and the Martin Luther King Jr. Center in Atlanta were not immediately available to comment.

(AP) ? Angry customers and gangs of scalpers threw eggs at Apple Inc.'s Beijing store Friday after the iPhone 4S launch there was canceled due to concerns over the crowd's size.

Apple reacted to the outburst by postponing iPhone 4S sales in its mainland China stores to protect customers and employees. The phone still will be sold online and through its local carrier.

The incident highlighted Apple's huge popularity in China and the role of middlemen who buy up limited supplies of iPhones and other products or smuggle them from abroad for resale to Chinese gadget fans at a big markup.

Hundreds of customers including migrant workers hired by scalpers in teams of 20 to 30 waited overnight in freezing weather at the Apple store in a shopping mall in Beijing's east side Sanlitun district.

The crowd erupted after the store failed to open on schedule at 7 a.m. Some threw eggs and shouted at employees through the windows.

A person with a megaphone announced the sale was canceled. Police ordered the crowd to leave and sealed off the area with yellow tape. Employees posted a sign saying the iPhone 4S was out of stock.

"We were unable to open our store at Sanlitun due to the large crowd, and to ensure the safety of our customers and employees, iPhone will not be available in our retail stores in Beijing and Shanghai for the time being," said Apple spokeswoman Carolyn Wu.

The iPhone 4S quickly sold out at other Apple stores in China, Wu said. She said the phone still will be sold in China through Apple's online store, its local carrier China Unicom Ltd. and authorized resellers.

Wu declined to comment on what Apple might know about scalpers buying iPhones for resale.

China is Apple's fastest-growing market and "an area of enormous opportunity," CEO Tim Cook said in October. He said quarterly sales were up nearly four times over a year earlier and accounted for one-sixth of Apple's global sales.

Apple's China stores are routinely mobbed for the release of new products.

The company has its own stores only in Beijing and Shanghai, with a handful of authorized retailers in other cities, so middlemen who buy iPhones and resell them in other areas can make big profits, said Wang Ying, who follows the mobile phone market for Analysys International, a research firm in Beijing.

"Apple is making a lot of money, so it is not too concerned about the scalpers," Wang said.

Wang and other industry analysts said the size of the underground trade and price markups are unclear.

In Shanghai, stores limited iPhone 4S sales to two per customer. Several hundred people were waiting when the stores opened, bundled up against the cold. Some passed the time playing mahjong.

Buyers included 500 older people from neighboring Jiangsu province who were hired by the boss of a mobile phone market, the newspaper Oriental Morning Post said. They arrived aboard an 11-bus convoy and were paid 150 yuan ($15) each.

Online bulletin boards were filled with comments about Friday's buying frenzy, many complaining about or ridiculing the scalpers.

An Apple contractor manufactures iPhones in China, but new models are released in other countries first. That has fueled a thriving "gray market" in China for phones smuggled in from Hong Kong and other markets.

Last May, the Sanlitun store was closed for several hours after a scuffle between an employee and a customer during the release of the iPhone 4, the previous model in the series.

Customers began gathering Thursday afternoon outside the Sanlitun store. People in the crowd said the number grew to as many as 2,000 overnight but many left when word spread the store would not open. About 350 people remained when the protest erupted after 7 a.m.

"On the one hand there is poor organization and on the other there were just too many people," said a man outside the Sanlitun store Friday, who would give only his surname, Miao. "I don't think they prepared well enough."

Another man who refused to give his name said he was a migrant laborer who was paid 100 yuan ($15) to wait in line overnight.

Others in the crowd said scalpers had organized groups of 20 to 30 migrant workers to buy phones or hold places in line. Organizers held colored balloons aloft to identify themselves to their workers.

Others said they were waiting to buy the phone for themselves.

"I just like the 4S," said Zhu Xiaodong, a Beijing resident. He said he was upgrading from the previous iPhone 4 model.

Sales in China began three months after the iPhone 4S had its global debut Oct. 14 in the United States and six other countries.

The delay between the release of Apple products in the United States and in China has yet to affect its reputation with Chinese customers, said Ted Dean, managing director of BDA China Ltd., a research firm in Beijing.

For other products, such a delay "sort of gives the impression here that you're not giving the Chinese consumer a fair shake," Dean said. "But demand and that 'cool factor' is so huge for Apple products that you don't hear that about them."

Behold the Future Of CES: The Booth Babe Mk II [Ce-yess!]

This chrome nightmare was heckling CES attendees, trying to coax them into TP-Link's booth to check out the company's wireless network wares. I generally like the lack of 'booth babes' at CES, since it means booths are staffed with personnel who actually know something about the products on display. More »

Couple Has UFO Sighting in California

Vacationing at the Cabin

In the UFO business, there are many reports of unidentified lights. Although there are few that match the popularity of the Phoenix Lights, still once in a while, one comes along that interests me.

In June, 2011, a couple from California was enjoying a weekend trip to their vacation cabin. One evening, they were out on their deck, just talking and doing a little sky watching. They were facing the southwest.

Because their cabin is in a highly forested area, their vision is limited, but they do have a clear view of the sky directly above them. It was shortly before midnight when the husband spotted something that appeared to be flickering similar to a candle flame.

He did not think much of it at first, thinking that possibly the atmosphere was causing a star to give off the flickering glow. It began as a single light that would get brighter, then dimmer. But then something changed.

Several Unknown Objects Seen

Now he could clearly see that the single, flickering light was joined by several smaller lights. They surrounded the main object, and flashed randomly. Although they brightened at times, they paled in comparison to the main light/object.

The main light now began to move from side to side. His wife, who was now enthralled with the objects, noticed that the colors of the smaller objects were changing; from white to red, back to white, then a green tint, and back to white again.

The main object would occasionally move, then remain stationary. This process repeated itself over and over again. Then it began to move in small circles for about 4 minutes. Before long, a second object was spotted, just to the right of the first one. It also would brighten, then dim.

Lights Form Triangle

Although the second object appeared later than the first, amazingly the two objects moved as if they were attached. In a minute or two, a third object made its appearance. It moved above the second light, and the witness stated that if you drew a dot from object to object, they would form an equilateral triangle.

At the two continued to observe the triangle of lights, they attempted to capture it on photograph, but the light from the triangle blurred together, making a clear photo impossible.

Animal Reaction

The couple could now hear the dog begin to howl from inside the house, something he hardly ever did. The wife went to the house to attend to him thinking he just wanted to go outside, but as soon as she saw him, she could tell he was frightened more than she had ever seen him. His eyes were bugged out, and his ears drawn down and shaking.

She got her dog to go outside and started walking him to a clearing in the trees. She clearly saw an extremely bright light to her southwest. It was larger, brighter and closer than the three lights of the triangle shape. This light/object jumped around in the sky before it slowly disappeared.

As soon as it had faded out, another light appeared; also very bright in the sky. Then it began to fade was soon gone from sight. Only the husband was able to see the second light appear, as his wife's neck was hurting from looking to the sky so much. All the while, the three lights of the triangle was still present.

After a prolonged time watching the enigmatic lights appear, the couple felt that they were being watched, and decided to call it a night. After going into the house for the night, their dog began to settle down some, but still had to sleep in their bed.

Original MTV veejays have book deal (AP)

NEW YORK ? MTV's surviving original veejays have some wild times to share.

Atria Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, announced Thursday that it had signed with Nina Blackwood, Mark Goodman, Alan Hunter and Martha Quinn for an "uncensored" oral history of the music channel launched in 1981. The book is currently untitled and no release date had been set. A fifth veejay, J.J. Jackson, died in 2004.

According to Atria, the veejays will talk about everything from partying with Van Halen to a disastrous "Paint the Mutha Pink" contest with "Pink Houses" singer John Cougar Mellencamp. The veejays also participated in an MTV oral history published last fall, but Atria spokesman Paul Olsewski said Thursday that they have saved their "best stories" for their own book.
