Stem cell therapy could offer new hope for defects and injuries to head, mouth

ScienceDaily (July 30, 2012) ? In the first human study of its kind, researchers found that using stem cells to re-grow craniofacial tissues -- mainly bone -- proved quicker, more effective and less invasive than traditional bone regeneration treatments.

Researchers from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry and the Michigan Center for Oral Health Research partnered with Ann Arbor-based Aastrom Biosciences Inc. in the clinical trial, which involved 24 patients who required jawbone reconstruction after tooth removal.

Patients either received experimental tissue repair cells or traditional guided bone regeneration therapy. The tissue repair cells, called ixmyelocel-T, are under development at Aastrom, which is a U-M spinout company.

"In patients with jawbone deficiencies who also have missing teeth, it is very difficult to replace the missing teeth so that they look and function naturally," said Darnell Kaigler, principal investigator and assistant professor at the U-M School of Dentistry. "This technology and approach could potentially be used to restore areas of bone loss so that missing teeth can be replaced with dental implants."

William Giannobile, director of the Michigan Center for Oral Health Research and chair of the U-M Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine, is co-principal investigator on the project.

The treatment is best suited for large defects such as those resulting from trauma, diseases or birth defects, Kaigler said. These defects are very complex because they involve several different tissue types -- bone, skin, gum tissue -- and are very challenging to treat.

The main advantage to the stem cell therapy is that it uses the patient's own cells to regenerate tissues, rather than introducing human-made, foreign materials, Kaigler said.

The results were promising. At six and 12 weeks following the experimental cell therapy treatment, patients in the study received dental implants. Patients who received tissue repair cells had greater bone density and quicker bone repair than those who received traditional guided bone regeneration therapy.

In addition, the experimental group needed less secondary bone grafting when getting their implants.

The cells used for the therapy were originally extracted from bone marrow taken from the patient's hip. The bone marrow was processed using Aastrom's proprietary system, which allows many different cells to grow, including stem cells. These stem cells were then placed in different areas of the mouth and jaw.

Stem cell therapies are still probably 5-10 years away from being used regularly to treat oral and facial injuries and defects, Kaigler said. The next step is to perform more clinical trials that involve larger craniofacial defects in a larger number of patients.

The study, "Stem cell therapy for craniofacial bone repair: A randomized, controlled clinical trial," appears this month in the journal Cell Transplantation.

State auditor pinpoints potential pitfalls in community college system

ALEXANDRIA ? Northern Virginia Community College ? the largest of the state?s 23 community colleges ? needs to fix certain purchasing practices.
The college was marked as a repeat offender for ?inadequate control? over its credit card purchasing program, says an annual state audit of the Virginia Community College System, released last week.

In many cases, cardholding employees failed to produce purchase logs or supporting receipts. The audit urged NVCC, with more than 50,000 students across six campuses, including one in Loudoun County, to follow written policies.

?When management identifies cardholders who are not following the college?s policies and procedures, they should take appropriate action in order to mitigate the risk of fraud, waste and abuse by cardholders,? the report noted.

Some 287,000 students across 40 campuses attend the state?s community colleges, overseen by the Richmond-based Virginia Community College System office. The colleges were given roughly $1.5 billion in state money this fiscal year.

NVCC is still picking up the pieces from an internal control collapse three years ago, Walter Kucharski, state auditor of public accounts, told Virginia Watchdog. Then, turnover in key fiscal positions at every NVCC campus, coupled with a lack of written policies, led to a bookkeeping mess.

?Needless to say, they have placed a tremendous amount of pressure on Northern Virginia to hire people and to have documents,? Kucharski said. ? ? They?ve made a lot of progress on fixing the problems they have.?

NVCC said it would work to ensure all six NVCC branches have a ?campus procurement buyer? who reviews purchases, and will cut back on the number of credit cards issued, among other changes.

?We?re not taking it lightly,? said Guy Meruvia, compliance and risk management director for NVCC whose position was added as a result of the audit.
NVCC and other colleges had oversight issues, but Kucharski saw no signs of abuse.

?I think our biggest concern right now is that they need to do a better job of monitoring what I would call high-risk transactions,? Kucharski said.

Flimsy internal accounting controls could, for example, allow staff members to pay fictitious vendors.

?If I can set myself as a vendor, I can then authorize me to get a check,? Kucharski said.

Apple, Samsung Face Off Over iPhone, iPad Patents

Apple Unveils Updated iPad

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS/AP) ? Two tech titans are squaring off in federal court Monday in a closely-watched trial over control of the U.S. smart phone and computer tablet markets.

Apple Inc. filed a lawsuit against Samsung Electronics Co. last year alleging the world?s largest technology company?s smart phones and computer tablets are illegal knockoffs of its popular iPhone and iPad products. The Cupertino-based company is demanding $2.5 billion in damages, which if awarded would dwarf the largest patent-related verdict to date.

Samsung counters that Apple is doing the stealing and some of the technology at issue ? such as the rounded rectangular designs of smart phones and tablets ? have been industry standards for years.

The U.S. trial is only the latest skirmish between the two over product designs.

Serena Williams through to second round in Olympics

LONDON (Reuters) - Wimbledon champion Serena Williams breezed through her first round match against Serbia's Jelena Jankovic on the opening day of the Olympic tennis on Saturday with U.S. first lady Michelle Obama cheering her on.

Obama watched from the players' box along with Williams' sister Venus as the fourth seed took just 61 minutes to see off former world number one Jankovic 6-3 6-1.

"It was great seeing Michelle there. It just made me want to play better and I felt even better. We're here for our country and to play well. I loved her dress, which is always nice. She is always looking good," Williams said after the match.

With the usual Wimbledon requirement for players to wear white not in place for the Olympics, Williams herself took to the court in a red, white and navy blue dress with a red headband, while Jankovic also wore red.

"It's so different than playing in all white and I was thinking 'I wouldn't like it', but I like it," she said, although then adding that she would "absolutely not" like to see colored clothing introduced at Wimbledon.

With the first set comfortably under her belt, five-time Wimbledon winner Williams took an early break in the second set when Jankovic hit the ball into the Olympic-ring adorned net.

The American quickly broke again to storm to a 3-0 lead, then denying her opponent a single point in the fourth game. Jankovic managed to hold her serve one more time, but appeared increasingly frustrated with herself, wrongly challenging two line judge's calls in a row.

Serving to stay in the match at 15-40, the 27-year-old was given a momentary reprieve when her opponent powered a backhand into the net.

The American, who has two doubles gold medals with Venus but is still seeking a single gold, let out a squeal of annoyance but she didn't have to wait long to secure her victory as Jankovic hit the next shot wide to gift her the match.

Astros lose 11th straight

By KRISTIE RIEKEN

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:44 p.m. ET July 27, 2012

HOUSTON (AP) - , Drew Sutton scored on a wild pitch in the ninth inning to propel the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 6-5 win over the hapless Houston Astros on Friday night.

The loss was Houston's 11th straight, tying the franchise record for most consecutive losses in a season. The Astros, who have baseball's worst record, (34-67) last lost 11 straight in 1995. They have lost 24 of their last 26 games.

The Astros led 5-4 entering the ninth inning before rookie Starling Marte's bases-loaded sacrifice fly tied it up. A pitch from Xavier Cedeno got away from catcher Chris Snyder and allowed Sutton to score and extend Houston's misery.

It was the third time in the last four games that Houston has lost after entering the ninth inning with a lead.

Tony Watson (5-1) pitched a scoreless eighth for the win and Joel Hanrahan did the same in the ninth for his 31st save.

Alex Presley hit a solo home run for Pittsburgh in the fourth and Michael McKenry, who finished with three hits, connected on a two-run shot in the fifth.

Houston's Chris Johnson came a single short of the cycle and Ben Francisco had a solo homer and drove in two runs for the Astros.

The game was tied at 4-all when Johnson tripled on a ball that rolled up the corner of Tal's Hill in center field with no outs in the seventh. J.D. Martinez's one-out grounder to left field sent Johnson home to put Houston on top.

Johnson doubled in the first inning and had a solo homer in the third before his seventh-inning triple. Johnson walked in the fifth inning, but struck out in his last at-bat in the eighth.

Rhiner Cruz (1-1) came in for Houston with one out in the ninth inning. McKenry singled before Cruz issued consecutive walks to load the bases before Marte's sacrifice fly off Cedeno.

Houston starter Jordan Lyles allowed seven hits and four runs while tying a career-high with eight strikeouts in 6-plus innings.

McKenry doubled to start the seventh inning and chase Lyles. McKenry advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt before tying it at 4-4 on a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Josh Harrison.

Pedro Alvarez singled to start the fifth before McKenry's shot to the Crawford Boxes in left field got the Pirates within 4-3.

Francisco hit the third straight single for the Astros in the second inning to drive in a run and put Houston up 1-0.

The Astros added a run in that inning when Justin Maxwell scored on a sacrifice bunt by Lyles. The ball dribbled slightly down the right field line on the play and catcher McKenry came out to grab it. Maxwell evaded his tag and then dived onto home plate to extend the lead to 2-0.

Johnson homered for the second straight game to leave Houston up 3-0 in the third inning.

The Pirates didn't get a hit until Presley's home run to right field with one out in the fourth inning made it 3-1.

Francisco's first home run as an Astro came to start Houston's fourth inning.

Pittsburgh starter Jeff Karstens yielded six hits and four runs with seven strikeouts in five innings. He allowed two home runs on Friday night after allowing just one in his previous eight starts this season.

The Astros had a chance to add to their lead when Karstens loaded the bases with three walks in the fifth inning, but he retired Francisco to escape the jam.

Astros reliever Wesley Wright had a busy eighth inning. He got the first out of the inning, before moving to right field while Wilton Lopez came on to pitch to Andrew McCutchen. Wright, who appeared in right field for the second time in his career, returned to the mound after a double by McCutchen and retired the next two batters to end the inning.

NOTES: The Pirates have homered in 17 straight road games. ... The Astros claimed RHP Chuckie Fick off waivers from St. Louis on Friday. ... Mike Scott, who won the Cy Young award with the Astros in 1986, threw out the first pitch on Friday night as part of the team's 50th anniversary celebration. ... Wandy Rodriguez, who was traded from the Astros to the Pirates on Tuesday, will start against his former team on Saturday in the third game of the four-game series.

Astronomers find strange stuff in the space between two clusters of galaxies

Web edition : 4:35 pm

Abell 222 is a giant group of galaxies in deep space. So is Abell 223 ? one of Abell 222?s nearest neighbors. Each galaxy in each group is home to a massive number of stars, which means the clusters are brimming with light. But if you peer through a telescope at the space between the two galaxy clusters, you won?t see anything, just a dark patch of sky. The scenery would be the same if you could ride a spaceship from one group of galaxies to the other.?

The space between the two galaxy clusters is, however, anything but empty, according to a new study by astronomers.

China will try Gu Kailai, the wife of ousted Politburo member Bo Xilai, on charges of murdering a British man, state media said on Thursday in the latest turn in a scandal that has rocked the government in Beijing and could bring Gu the death penalty.

The contentious dismissal of Bo has already shaken the Communist Party's looming once-in-a-decade succession, and now Gu and family aide Zhang Xiaojun will be prosecuted for allegedly poisoning businessman Neil Heywood last year over "conflict of economic interests", the official Xinhua news agency said.

"The facts of the two defendants' crime are clear, and the evidence is irrefutable and substantial," said the Xinhua report summarising the indictment. "Therefore, the two defendants should be charged with intentional homicide."

Gu and Zhang will face trial in Hefei, a city in eastern China, far from Chongqing, the sprawling municipality in the southwest where Bo made his political base and where Heywood died in a hillside hotel in November.

Bo has not been named as a suspect in the murder case, but he is separately under investigation by party authorities and could also face trial at a later time.

Political observers have said a failure to forge a unified stance on handling the divisive Bo case could affect the Communist Party's focus on working out the leadership changes that will be decided at the upcoming congress.

Bo, the 62-year-old party chief of Chongqing before his dismissal, was widely seen as pushing for a spot in that new leadership until felled by the scandal brought to light by his former police chief, Wang Lijun.

"As big as this case is, the party congress will now proceed quite smoothly," said Joseph Fewsmith, a professor of Chinese politics at Boston University.

"The party has handled this case as one of one person breaking the law. The ideological issues have been pushed to the side, although that doesn't mean they're not there."

Trial Seen in Early August?

Xinhua did not give a date for the trial, but Shen Zhigeng, a lawyer who had been employed by Gu's family, told Reuters that her trial was likely to start on Aug. 7 or 8. China's party-run courts rarely find in favour of defendants, and Gu and Zhang could face the death penalty.

In London, the British Foreign Office responded to news of the indictment by saying it was glad the investigation was continuing.

"The details of the ongoing investigation are a matter for the Chinese authorities," it added in a statement.

"However we are glad to see that the Chinese authorities are continuing with the investigation into the death of Neil Heywood. We are dedicated to seeking justice for him and his family and we will be following developments closely," it added.

sandstone paving, stone cladding - Stone Cladding:Beautifying Your ...

Would you like to improve the appearance of your home? Try perth stone paving. This has countless distinct functions for garden landscaping. You could find these smooth-textured pavers in patios, sidewalks, driveways. Contractors and landscape design specialists use them frequently for garden walls, borders, and seats. Additionally, they set this all around private pools or use this to create steps, retain walls, or stepping-stones. Your homebuilder or artist may incorporate pavers of various styles, sizes, and tones to make a stylish paving design. Here is additional information concerning this option.

Sandstone Paving: Beautifying Gardens

Sandstone paving is popular in garden areas. These pavers can be piled over one another to make short walls all-around a garden or fountain. Your homebuilder ought to place mortar in between the pavers to help keep the construction from falling over. Sandstone pavers make good-looking borders trimming around patios, driveways, and gardens.

You may place sandstone pavers about private pools for a vivid and attractive surface area. The earth-toned colors of sandstone usually contrast perfectly with the pool colour. Your building contractors may use a sealer to guard the sandstone from deteriorating from saltwater or sunlight. They can even utilize sandstone pool coping along side the side of the pool for a consistent appearance. They could even use special non-slip coatings to the surface for security.

Homebuilders may install these pavers as steps leading to the entranceway, patio, deck, or porch for a resort-like feel. Setting up the stones in a mortar base can even them out and keep them long lasting. You may turn sandstone pavers on their sides to make a small retaining wall over the side of the steps.

You may use stone cladding for both the interior and exterior of your home to add inventive and decorative feature. You will discover this inside a home, near fireplaces and walls. On the exterior, home builders utilize stone cladding over the framing or affixed on outside walls- either siding or brick to offer a durable finish.

Here are popular types of stone cladding:

-Solid Stone

This is the most favorite kind of stone cladding. This is naturally hefty and difficult to move. Even though some people still construct homes entirely out of polished stone, it is more common to utilize this as an accent. These are great for chimneys, or a single wall.

-Faux Stone

Faux stone is a manufactured product that appears and feels like real stone. It is available in lots of tones, shapes and sizes. The only real distinction is its weight- it is lighter than authentic stone. Makers create faux stone from poured concrete and shape this into slate pieces or stones using moulds. As opposed to real stone, you don't need to seal this to prevent wetness from seeping within.

-Polyurethane Foam Panels

This sort of stone cladding features the appearance of real stone but none of its weight. They are really light and resistant to moisture. Also, they are easy to install and ship. You can set these over existing siding or interior walls, boosting the efficiency of your insulation.

With sand stone paving and cladding you could make your house more appealing and long lasting. Get top quality materials and employ specialists for proper installation.

Mapping the Molecular Changes in Colorectal Cancer. | someone ...

A molecular analysis of colon and rectal tumors has yielded insights that could lead to more targeted treatments for patients with this disease, according to a report by investigators from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) Research Network. Their findings are publicly available (here and here) and summarized in Nature this month.

TCGA investigators have previously reported on the molecular changes underlying ovarian cancer and glioblastoma, an often deadly brain cancer. In the new analysis, the researchers comprehensively characterized the genomes of 224 colon or rectal tumors, as well as matched normal DNA from the donors.

After excluding from their analysis tumors that had abnormally high rates of genetic mutation (hypermutated tumors), the researchers found no significant genomic differences between colon and rectal tumors, based on a variety of measures, including the number of copies of genes and the gene expression profiles of the tumors.

But an analysis of the molecular pathways in colorectal tumors showed that pathways could be disrupted in a number of ways. Some tumors had potentially cancer-related changes in multiple pathways, suggesting to the researchers that targeting a single pathway would not be sufficient to treat these tumors.

Most of the approved treatments for colorectal cancer are chemotherapies that produce poor response rates, noted Dr. Raju Kucherlapati of Harvard Medical School, who co-led the study. The new findings could form the basis for developing and testing therapies that target the molecular changes driving the disease, he added.

?There are a number of genetic changes present [in the tumors we examined], and drugs that target many of these changes are already in development,? Dr. Kucherlapati continued. For selected patients, new targeted drugs ?have the potential to be highly effective.?

He and his colleagues in the TCGA Research Network also found that 16 percent of the tumors were hypermutated. This phenomenon may be caused by defects in a cell?s ability to repair damaged DNA. Hypermutated tumors may also be aggressive.

Three-quarters of the specimens had a genetic change called microsatellite instability, which is associated with a better prognosis.

The researchers also found that the gene IGF2, which plays a role in cell proliferation, was altered in some tumors. Drugs that target the product of this gene or its receptor are in development and could be tested in patients whose tumors have alterations in IGF2.

The data from this study ?provide an unprecedented resource for understanding this deadly disease and identifying possibilities for treating it in a targeted way,? the authors concluded.

The retired justice also said Mr. Obama?s actions were ?unusual? when he criticized the justices in his 2010 State of the Union address and when he issued a warning to the Supreme Court this spring that any decision striking down his health-care reform law would be illegitimate judicial activism.

?If there is a pending decision at the Supreme Court and the president were to express views along those lines ? it would be unusual,? Justice O?Connor said.

?We have tended in this country to not speak out about a decision in a pending case,? she added. ?It can happen, but it is not expected and not ideal.?

O?Connor made the comments while appearing as a lone witness before the Senate Judiciary Committee. She was present primarily to discuss a nationwide project called iCivics that she organized to foster greater understanding among students about how US government and American courts work.

Despite that mission, O?Connor was nonetheless drawn into the lingering controversy surrounding last month?s high court decision upholding the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

The committee chairman, Sen. Patrick Leahy (D) of Vermont, opened the door with a comment about how ?a member of the court was labeled a traitor and accused of betraying the president who appointed him.?

O?Connor replied: ?It is unfortunate because comments like that demonstrate a lack of understanding about the role of the judicial branch.?

Leahy?s reference was to Chief Justice Roberts, who reportedly changed sides during behind-the-scenes deliberations and joined the court?s liberal wing to uphold the health-care law rather than strike it down.

Angry conservatives accused Roberts of bowing to political pressure, including warnings that Obama would launch political attacks against the Supreme Court ? and Roberts in particular ? as part of his reelection campaign.

In addition to the president, Senator Leahy himself targeted Roberts in a Senate floor speech in May ? a month and a half before the decision was announced.

?I trust that he [Roberts] will be a chief justice for all of us and that he has a strong institutional sense of the proper role of the judicial branch,? Leahy said. ?The conservative activism of recent years has not been good for the court. Given the ideological challenge to the Affordable Care Act and the extensive, supportive precedent, it would be extraordinary for the Supreme Court not to defer to Congress in this matter that so clearly affects interstate commerce.?

Man frees 17-pound lobster from Conn. restaurant

WATERFORD, Conn. (AP) ? A Connecticut man purchased a 17-pound lobster at a Waterford restaurant, then released the crustacean back into Long Island Sound.

Don MacKenzie of Niantic tells The Day of New London (http://bit.ly/MGvGHb ) he knew the lobster, nicknamed "Lucky Larry" by local children, would have to be about 80-years-old to reach his current size and felt it deserved to live.

MacKenzie won't say how much he paid The Dock restaurant to take Larry off the menu.

He took the lobster back to sea Tuesday, releasing it in a secret location.

MacKenzie received a send-off from a group of children chanting "Let Larry Live" and the lobster was given a salute from the Niantic River Bridge operator who sounded the lift bridge's siren as the boat carrying it headed back to sea.

Orrin Hatch Wants To Do A Deal On Taxes With Tea Party Threat ...

WASHINGTON ? Rare is the Tea Party-tested Republican senator who hangs an image of the Kennedys? Hyannisport home over his desk and shows off the painter?s personal inscription.

?Orrin,? reads the note, scribbled below a cobalt-blue sea. ?We?ll leave the light on at the compound for you anytime. Ted Kennedy, ?91.?

The beacon of bipartisanship that defined their odd-couple relationship still guides Utah?s Orrin Hatch. He didn?t advertise it as he wooed and won over the tea partiers who, two years ago, toppled fellow conservative Robert Bennett from his Senate perch.

But now, with his state?s Senate GOP nomination in hand and re-election to a seventh term all but assured, Hatch, 78, can think about his legacy.

He?s very clear about what he wants: As the senior Republican in the Senate, his party?s top voice on the tax-writing Finance Committee, Hatch wants a deal that restructures the tax code while also slowing and even stopping the government?s accumulation of debt. To get it, he says he?ll practice the art of compromise over the take-my-marbles-and-leave mentality that has tied up Congress in recent years.

?There has to be a course correction,? Hatch said in a recent interview. ?If I am chairman of the Finance Committee, you can bet your sweet bippy I will take a leading role.?

A new tax code, he says, would have to be bipartisan to pass Congress and, as importantly, have credibility with the Americans who will fork over large chunks of their paychecks under it. Orchestrating it will require a delicate touch with Washington?s most muscular interest groups and stubborn factions of both parties.

In the vaulted Capitol hideaway office he inherited from Kennedy ? the seascape hanging nearby ? Hatch offered a reality check on how lawmaking happens.

?Neither side is going to get everything they want,? he said. ?But it is important that we move ahead, and that we do the art of the doable to pull this country out of the fiscal morass it?s in. And I think we can.?

Hatch can be so explicit about compromise now because he is the ultimate Senate survivor:

_Of his own stern, televised reading of ?The Exorcist? during the confirmation hearings of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.

_Of a failed presidential bid in 2000 that was dwarfed by the George W. Bush juggernaut.

_Of his vote for the 2008 bank bailout, an apostasy to the same tea partiers who ousted Bennett.

_And in June, of the first real threat to re-election since winning his Senate seat in 1976.

Washington?s political tribal chiefs know that the conservatism Hatch has emphasized in his re-election campaign co-exists with an interest in getting results on Capitol Hill and a long-demonstrated willingness to compromise.

The type of real, red-faced debate that delighted Hatch and Kennedy also produced landmark laws like the American Disabilities Act and children?s health insurance. With former Democratic Sen. Chris Dodd, the bellowing begat federally subsidized child care. Tense talks with no less a partisan than Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., produced a patent exemption that cleared the way for the generic drug industry.

Hatch?s last two years of ideological purity ? a 100 percent rating from the American Conservative Union, compared with an average 84 percent rating the previous five years ? may have been driven by a survival instinct, but it still irritates some.

Vice President Biden recalled how the Utah Republican was an original co-sponsor of his 1994 bill that became the Violence Against Women Act, only to vote against its renewal and expansion this year.

?Orrin and I always had a good personal relationship. We disagreed on a lot but where we found common ground, we worked together,? Biden said in a statement to The Associated Press. ?I hope those days return.?

Tax reform could well be Hatch?s enduring legacy. The contours of the debate are clear and broadly philosophical: Republicans think the government levies enough taxes already but growing the economy would produce more revenue. Democrats say the wealthiest are not taxed enough.

Much, of course, depends on who wins the White House and control of Congress.

Here is where the debate would start: Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney agrees with Hatch that there should be a one-year extension on all of the Bush-era tax cuts, then comprehensive tax reform. President Barack Obama wants to let those tax cuts expire for Americans making more than $250,000 a year, and then do reform.

Hatch would have great say in where the discussion ends ? with a new tax code, a collapse of talks or something in-between. He has willing negotiating partners in both parties, beginning with his Democratic counterpart atop the Finance Committee hierarchy, Sen. Max Baucus of Montana, and including some of the most agile dealmakers in Congress.

?Orrin is good, one of the best,? says Waxman.

No one suggests that Hatch, for all his red meat bluster lately, comes back to the Senate next year any less of a dealmaker. Right now, longtime colleagues say, Hatch is doing what Hatch does best: adapt to the ?rhythms of change.?

?Politics is not a static business. The ability of someone who?s good at this, and unfortunately we don?t give enough credit for it, is the ability to understand that the public?s mood is not static either,? Dodd, now president and CEO of the Motion Picture Association of America, said in an interview. ?Orrin?s got a very good ear. And he used it.?

The South Carolina Republican who calls himself ?Sen. Tea Party? attributes Hatch?s longevity to engaging, rather than dismissing, critics from the right.

?He didn?t go home and try to explain to people why they were wrong,? said Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., a chief patron of tea party candidates. ?He went home and listened.?

By the time the tea party had defeated Bennett in a state convention two years ago, Hatch was already on the move. He faced voters deeply suspicious about Washington insiders. For those who said that 36 years in office was enough, he said that he wouldn?t be running again if it weren?t for the chance he?ll become chairman of the Finance Committee. For those who said he wasn?t conservative enough, he gravitated to the right.

Hatch also spent about $10 million on a campaign unlike any Utah had seen. He won endorsement from Romney, another of Utah?s favorite sons. In the state?s June primary running against former state Sen. Dan Liljenquist, Hatch won two-thirds of the vote.

Three months from the general election, Hatch is still riling up the base. He?ll casually toss off a comment about how he doesn?t understand why Obama?s experience as a community organizer qualifies him to lead the country. He framed Obama?s plans to tax the wealthiest Americans as an attack on small businesses.

For many, the question is whether Hatch hews to conservatism in what are sure to be tough negotiations on taxes and changing entitlement benefit programs.

DeMint thinks a brief moment and concludes, ?I trust him.?

IT Turning Point meets InVite Business Networking | IT Turning Point

InVite Business Networking

Business Networking with a Passion

We have learned a lot of lessons on our trip into business and one of the greatest is the need for small to medium sized businesses to keep in touch and help each other out. Bounce ideas around and encourage and help each other as often as possible.

When I started this business I decided from the word go that I would go around as many of the networking group?s I could and see what format suited me best and what other companies were talking about and experiencing out there in the big bad world.

I found these a melting pot of different people with many different ideas and passions.

In fact what came across from many of the people and businesses I met and am still meeting is their passion for what they thought could be achieved. They weren?t just selling a business idea or telling me about their business they had a passion burning inside about it. That was something that I had so I could immediately relate to it.

Many things try and drive it out from you in the early days, such as banks, cash flow and people who are being friends, ?Well it?s not a good time to set up a business and we are in recession.?

If I heard that once I heard that a million times. When will be the right time?

I eventually found the type of networking that suited me and have stuck to it and attended even when I felt I did not want to. Each time I have come away with a sense of satisfaction and have met some brilliant people over the last few years.

With this all in mind, I wanted to gather all this passion together into one place and let it bounce of everyone in the room, think of it like a light show.

So a good friend and organisation I deal with have come in with me, Tim Thomson, Manager at The Vine Venue, Dunfermline, ?to create InVite Business Networking, we launched in June and had 19 businesses attend the opening event. We have held one in July and 14 businesses attended some new ones from the original event and we are holding the next one on the 16th August.

Out tag line is Get Involved?? and we truly believe we can change things, when small businesses get together with passion; we become the equivalent of a larger organisation without all the politics.

We are launching the InVite soapbox in September where each business who attends regularily will get 10 minutes to soapbox their business passion. We are having guest speakers and a once a year business showcase.

If you feel there is a need for this and you can feel the passion we have then come along and get involved?.

Thousands march in Mexico City against presumed presidential winner Enrique Pena Nieto

MEXICO CITY - Thousands marched through Mexico City's center on Sunday to protest what they called the "imposition" of the candidate of the old ruling party as the country's new president.

Protesters carried signs accusing presumed President-elect Enrique Pena Nieto of electoral fraud and Mexico television giant Televisa of being a "factory of lies." Opponents say Pena Nieto's party, the Institutional Revolutionary Party, won the July 1 election through vote-buying and overspending, including paying major media outlets such as Televisa for favorable coverage.

"Mexico didn't vote for fraud. Mexico wants a country that is honest and democratic," said marcher Marlem Munoz, 26, who studies dentistry at Mexico's National Autonomous University. "What happened in the elections was a total mockery directed at the Mexican people."

The PRI has vehemently denied the charges and on Friday accused losing leftist candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador of trying to "disqualify the entire electoral process with lies." Televisa also has denied charges of being paid for positive coverage.

Mexico City authorities did not immediately release an official crowd estimate, but the march appeared to draw far fewer people than similar protests before the election with as many as 90,000 participants. A July 7 march, the first after election, drew 50,000. The events have attracted people from a new student movement, "I Am 132," and leftist groups supporting Lopez Obrador.

The lower participation raises questions of whether Mexico's university students have spawned a real movement in their demand for "authentic democracy" and an opening of Mexico's media, or if it's just part of the standard post-election protests in Mexico. In 2006, after Lopez Obrador narrowly lost to President Felipe Calderon, he marshaled hundreds of thousands of supporters to block Mexico City's main center for weeks.

Lopez Obrador said he will not mobilize people to the streets this time. His choking of central Mexico City in 2006 was highly unpopular with everyday residents.

I Am 132 has released a series of proposed events over the coming weeks, including Sunday's march, designed to overturn the vote results.

Other groups have said they will block the Dec. 1 inauguration of Pena Nieto.

Pena Nieto, 46, won the presidential election by 6.6 percentage points, according to the official count, bringing the PRI back to power after 12 years in opposition. The party had ruled Mexico for 71 consecutive years, with what critics say was the help of corruption, patronage and vote fraud.

The final vote count must be certified in September by the Federal Electoral Tribunal.

The current ruling conservative National Action Party, whose candidate came in third, joined Lopez Obrador's Democratic Revolution Party this week in demanding that electoral authorities investigate the purported use of pre-paid debit cards by Pena Nieto's campaign to disburse an estimated 108 million pesos ($8.2 million) in funds.

The PRI counters that they have presented no -evidence.

Milwaukee Business Networking Opportunities: Las Vegas Web ...

By Cj Watkins

Acquiring and selecting your web development for Las Vegas web design may seem just like an unneeded expense. But without combining the expertise of a designer, artist, engineer, and video editor, some element of your web site will come up short. And the "free five page web site" offers that may be found on the web use simple templates which will have your web site looking like many others. If you are going to take the time to put yourself out there on the net, you might as well do it right.

The first thing to consider in selecting you web development for Las Vegas web design is will they make a site customized to your needs? Not every web site needs streaming video, flash graphics, and interaction with thousands of users. Sometimes just simple display, information, and a means of checkout are all that is needed. But, it helps to know that should the need arise for launching your own social media site, that your designer has the ability to build one for you.

Then there are those designers that love to tout how they will do anything to earn your business, how no one beats their price, and so forth. But what are you really getting with such a cut rate operation? If you go about selecting your web site development for Las Vegas web design based only on price, you will get disappointed.

It is like buying your computer; you can buy one cheap by a used one, but you have no way of knowing what's wrong with it or just how long it will last. But if you select a refurbished computer, that has a new hard drive and upgraded memory within it, it may cost more, but is often a better value. You know it's not going to fry out on you within a month or two. A cut rate shop is cutting costs some place, and it can reflect in the grade of your site.

Finally, you can have a site that will bump people off their chair if they click on it, and still never have the ability to find it. Unless an online site is, should we say internet search engine friendly, the chances of being optimized for the keywords and phrases you want are hard. Very few sites are put up minus the intention of attracting visitors, even when they don't specifically sell something. By selecting your web site development for Las vegas web design with those who know the ins and outs regarding SEO and advertising, you can realize the complete potential of your site once it is up and running.

Picking your web developer for Las Vegas web design shouldn't be a epic search, you just have to find people that could tailor the site for your specific needs. Plus a properly designed site may be easily optimized to attract visitors, thus allowing you to either offer ones wares or get a message out.
