Anonymous' Greek Finance Ministry Hack and Information Freedom

The activist group Anonymous has hacked the Greek Ministry of Finance and released documents as the government heads toward its vote on further cuts to ensure another loan.

The economy in Europe is in no great state and Greece in particular has seen painful moves to try and drag the country out of crisis. Just today the Telegraph reported that Greece?s debt to GDP will hit 189.1pc and the economy is expected to contract by 4.5pc next year. The BBC recently pointed out that the country?s level of unemployment hit 25% in July with over 1,000 jobs lost every day over the past year.

It?s no wonder people are tired and angry with the situation and that parts of organisations like Anonymous are taking action to find information.

In it?s signature style of writing Anonymous posted the hacked files on pastebin with the following message.

Greetings citizens of the world
Greetings citizens of Greece
We are anonymous.

The Greek government is prepared to testify to a vote in the Greek Parliament the new package of economic austerity measures of 13.5 billion euros which are expected to prolong the recession in Greece.

Under the austerity measures, pensioners have seen a 60 percent fall in their pensions ? meaning their life savings are now less than half what they expected.

Meanwhile, the government is considering more cuts, raising the retirement age and putting a cap on free healthcare provision of just ?1,500 per person per year.

Greece used to have one of the lowest suicide rates in the EU but since 2010, the number of people taking their own lives has increased by 40 percent, with a large proportion from the older generation.

Sixty-eight percent of Greece?s population living below the at-risk-of poverty rate (ie, having an income below 60 percent of the national median) were spending over 40 percent of their income on rent or mortgage payments.

More than 439,000 underage children are living below poverty level in Greece due to the ongoing crisis, according to a UNICEF report released on Oct. 16 on the occasion of the World Feed Day 2012 and the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

The popularity of far right parties, including the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn, has risen in tandem.

Your goverment failed you.

Censorship

Whether or not people agree with the actions of Anonymous in collecting their information. The move to hack a ministry is an extreme one, possibly borne out of the fact that Greece has been muzzling its media.

Some may argue that this is a move to calm an already hectic situation, but more often than not, an informed public is able to make its own mind up rather than rallying in ignorance and anger.

Today reports have shown that another journalist was arrested in relation to the Anonymous hack.

TV reporter Spiros Karatzaferis said that he had information from Anonymous about the Greek deficit that he would present on his show on October 31. However, he was arrested apparently not for possessing the information but for an unrelated case.

According to the Greek Reporter website, Karatzaferis said he had been detained on an old warrant for a case in which he had accused judges of organising outside of the government.

Index on Censorship has published an excellent and in-depth report on the lack of freedom of the press in Greece at the moment. Multiple arrests, accusations of torture and the cancellation of TV shows covering these issues do not make for happy reading.

Costas Vaxevanis, editor of the ?Hot Doc? magazine, was arrested just this weekend after publishing the ?Lagarde List?, a document that French Authorities handed over to Athens so that account holders could be investigated for tax evasion.

Writing in the Guardian this week, Vaxenvanis said ?Greece gave birth to democracy. Now it has been cast out by a powerful elite.?

That said, if Anonymous takes further action following its hack, it could mean the elite will have to look out for a more powerful distributed network.

Beijing carries out sweeping military shuffle to keep top soldiers out of politics ahead of leadership change

Macau News.Net Wednesday 24th October, 2012

With two weeks remaining before a Communist Party leadership change, a spokesman for China's Defense Ministry confirmed that Gen. Ma Xiaotian had already been appointed as the new air force chief, a post that is almost certain to give him one of the 12 seats on the Central Military Commission, which commands the armed forces.

The spokesman also confirmed that another official, Gen. Zhang Yang had been appointed as head of the armed forces' powerful General Political Department, another post that usually comes with a guaranteed seat on the Central Military Commission, known as the CMC, the Wall Street Journal reports.

"This suggests a focus on promoting competent, professional soldiers who'll continue the modernization of the military and who are willing to stay out of politics," said Taylor Fravel, a professor of political science and expert on China's military at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

According to military experts and party insiders, the appointments were the first official indications of who is likely to replace the seven or eight CMC members due to retire in a once-a-decade shuffle of the party leadership that kicks off at the 18th Congress, starting Nov. 8, the paper said. Exercise: Nature's Mood Enhancer | World of Psychology

Exercise: Nature's Mood EnhancerHow often have you wished for a happiness drug without health or legal consequences?

Good news: Nature has built the answer into the human body. Regular exercise acts as a mood booster and happens to be good for people.

You have probably heard about the euphoria athletes often feel after sustained exertion, and perhaps you have felt your mood lift after a workout or a brisk walk. However, the exercise high doesn?t depend on long workouts.

In fact, the best results come from doing a little each day.

The Chemistry of Exercise

Stress is a prevalent issue, but the stress response actually is beneficial during exercise. When you begin a workout, your heart rate rises and triggers the body?s fight-or-flight instinct. The brain releases a chemical called brain-derived neurotrophic factor to protect neurons from the anticipated effects of a prolonged battle. At the same time, the brain releases endorphins to numb pain and facilitate peak performance.

These chemicals also induce feelings of well-being. Endorphins can cause euphoria (known as the runner?s high). Brain-derived neurotrophic factor soothes ruffled neurons to promote a sense of clarity. This is why a problem can seem more manageable after a walk or run to clear your head. Your brain has literally returned to baseline to allow you to respond most effectively to environmental threats.

The useful thing about brain-derived neurotrophic factor and endorphins is that they are addictive, just like nicotine. When people crave cigarettes, they are expressing the desires of nicotinic receptors in the nervous system. The urge to smoke can feel overwhelming. Similarly, the body can become addicted to the sense of clarity and well-being that often follows exercise.

The Happiness Workout

If exercise truly is addictive, why isn?t everyone a triathlete? The answer may lie in the conditions under which exertion triggers happiness. As with many addictive behaviors, the greatest euphoria occurs when starting a workout regimen. This may partially explain the enthusiasm new gym members feel and why so many of them stop going after a few months. As the happiness effect tapers off, people are no longer biochemically rewarded for working out. It becomes another chore, and only the highly motivated continue.

Fortunately, an answer exists that doesn?t involve extraordinary willpower. Much public attention has focused on research findings that just 20 minutes of exercise per day can have substantial physical benefits.

Additional studies suggest that the same routine powers feelings of happiness as well. Just as a smoker reaches for that first morning cigarette, so the person hitting the gym daily can expect a mood boost. The brain becomes conditioned to the expectation of the regular release of endorphins and other mood-enhancing chemicals.

Daily workouts are the best way to maximize the happiness effect. Weekend warriors and people who exercise every other day are less likely to feel a mood boost. They are too frequently active to benefit from the beginners? high. At the same time, they don?t exercise regularly enough to form a biochemical habit.

For many people, an effective solution is to alter their expectations of what a workout should be. Rather than exercising strenuously when energy and schedule allow, aim for 20 or 30 minutes per day of moderate activity such as walking. If this seems like too much, start with 10 minutes. The point is to establish a daily exercise habit that trains the brain to respond with feelings of happiness.

Daily exercise becomes a self-reinforcing habit motivated by positive feelings. Once your brain associates workouts with happiness, you?ll wonder how you managed so long without those running shoes.

Gender discrimination a reason why females choose careers outside the hard sciences

Gender discrimination a reason why females choose careers outside the hard sciences

Tuesday, October 23, 2012

Both male and female scientists view gender discrimination as a major reason women choose to pursue careers in biology rather than physics, according to new research from Rice University.

"Gender Segregation in Elite Academic Science," which appears in the October issue of Gender and Society, reveals differences in the way male and female scientists view disparities in the proportion of women in some science disciplines. The study surveyed 2,500 biologists and physicists at 30 elite institutions of higher education in the United States. Researchers also interviewed a smaller scientific sample of 150 scientists one on one about the reasons they believe there are gender differences in scientific disciplines.

"The distribution of women and men across various science-related occupations has long drawn both popular and scholarly attention," said lead study author and principal investigator Elaine Howard Ecklund, an associate professor of sociology. "In our research, we're interested in how scientists explain the different proportions of men and women in biology and physics.

"We know from various pieces of research that people's perceptions of the way things are really influence how they act with other people," she said. "When mentoring students, they might pass these views along. This makes their opinions extremely important, as they can have a significant impact on future scientists and research."

The study's key finding is that both male and female scientists view gender discrimination as a factor in women's decision not to choose a science career at all or to choose biology over physics. However, the two sexes still have differences in opinion about when discrimination occurs.

"During interviews, men almost never mentioned present-day discrimination, believing that any discrimination in physical science classes likely took place early in the educational history (primary school), which they believe explains women's predisposition to biological sciences," Ecklund said. "However, female scientists believe that discrimination is still occurring in present-day universities and departments."

Regardless of gender or discipline, approximately half of all the scientists interviewed thought that at some point in women's educational lives, they are discouraged from pursing a career in physics.

Other reasons scientists gave to explain the different numbers of women that pursue biology when compared with physics include mentorship of students in the fields of biology and physics and "inherent differences between men and women."

One female scientist said, "I think women ? want to have more of a sense that what they are doing is helping somebody. Maybe there are more women in ? biology (because) you can be like, 'Oh, I am going to go cure cancer.'"

Whereas women often explained sex differences between the disciplines using reasons of emotional affinity, men stressed neurological differences as being responsible for personal choices. One male scientist suggested that there are "some brain differences between men and women that explain (the gender differences between the disciplines)."

Ecklund said, "It's extremely important to understand how scientists at the kind of top research universities we studied feel about this topic, as they train the next generation of researchers and leaders in the sciences and will pass on their ideas to these young scholars."

###

Ecklund authored the article with co-principal investigator Anne Lincoln of Southern Methodist University and former Rice University undergraduate Cassandra Tansey. The paper is part of Ecklund's larger study with Lincoln titled "Perceptions of Women in Academic Science," which examines how male and female biologists and physicists in the U.S. differ in regard to important influences in their science career.

The study was funded by the National Science Foundation and is available online at http://gas.sagepub.com/content/26/5/693.abstract.

Iraq budget based on $90 Brent oil price

BAGHDAD: Iraq?s cabinet approved a 2013 draft budget of 138 trillion Iraqi dinars ($118.6 billion) based on a world oil price of $90 a barrel and expected oil exports of 2.9 million barrels per day (BPD), Iraqi officials said.
Iraq has the world?s fourth-largest oil reserves and depends on oil revenues to fund 95 percent of its national budget.
?The cabinet approved the 2013 budget with 138 trillion dinars and it will send it to parliament for final approval,? said Ali Al-Moussawi, Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Al-Maliki?s media adviser.
The projected oil exports include 250,000 BPD from the semi-autonomous region of Kurdistan, and federal revenues of $102 billion, government spokesman Ali Al-Dabbagh said in a statement.
The budget deficit will be estimated at 18.8 trillion dinars ($16.17 billion), he said.
That will be covered by unused funds from the 2012 budget, funds in the Development Fund of Iraq (DFI) account at the New York Federal Reserve, local debt issued through treasury bonds, or from an expected surplus from higher oil prices.
Since parliament only approved the 2012 budget of $100 billion in February, many government offices have not spent their allocations.
The DFI was established after the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq in order to direct oil revenues to reconstruction and food programs for Iraqis. Iraq holds the bulk of proceeds from its oil export sales in the DFI.
Oil prices were at $108 a barrel yesterday.
The $118.6 billion budget included 55 trillion Iraqi dinars ($47.29 billion) for investment projects.
OPEC-member Iraq exported an average of 2.6 million barrels per day (bpd) in September, the highest total crude exports in decades, and aims to boost shipments to above 2.8 million bpd this month.
It also aims to double its output over the next three years after decades of neglect of infrastructure due to war and economic sanctions.

FDA probing reports of energy-drink deaths

Amid increasing scrutiny of the fast-growing energy drink industry, federal health officials are investigating reports that five people have died since 2009 after consuming Monster Beverage Corp.'s energy drinks.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said it hadn't established a link between Monster energy drinks and the reports it has received concerning five deaths and another non-fatal heart attack. The government inquiry comes after a Maryland couple sued the Corona company last week in California for negligence and wrongful death in connection with the death of their 14-year-old daughter, Anais Fournier.

She is one of the five reported deaths, which came to light in a public-records request filed in her case, her lawyers said.

These disclosures triggered a sell-off Monday in Monster Beverage shares, which plummeted $7.59, or 14%, to $45.73.

A spokesman for Monster Beverage said the company "does not believe that its beverages are in any way responsible for the death of Ms. Fournier" and said it intends to vigorously defend itself in the case. The company added that it's "unaware of any fatality anywhere that has been caused by its drinks."

As part of its safety surveillance, the FDA routinely receives reports of adverse events tied to certain consumer products, drugs and medical devices. FDA spokeswoman Shelly Burgess said the agency is looking into the Monster reports but hadn't reached any conclusions about any "causal link."

Some lawmakers and consumer advocates are calling for tougher regulation of energy drinks sold by Monster, Red Bull and beverage giants such as Coca-Cola Co. and PepsiCo Inc. These highly caffeinated and sometimes sugar-laden drinks, including top sellers 5-Hour Energy and Rockstar, have become popular pick-me-ups for a wide range of consumers and are heavily marketed as a way to boost performance, focus or overall health.

Last year, energy drink sales grew nearly 17%, according to industry publication Beverage Digest, and Monster led the industry with a 35% market share. Monster's net sales rose 28% to $592.6 million in the quarter ended June 30 compared with the same period a year ago.

In April, Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Ill.) asked the FDA to investigate the caffeine levels and safety of other additives in energy drinks, particularly in light of their appeal among young people. Durbin noted that one 16-ounce can of Monster has 160 milligrams of caffeine, equivalent to almost five cans of a regular soft drink. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises against adolescents' consuming more than 100 milligrams of caffeine daily.

The FDA has authority to regulate caffeine levels in soft drinks, and the limit in a 12-ounce soda is about 71 milligrams. But most energy drinks exceed those levels because they are labeled as dietary supplements. Critics call for energy-drink makers to provide regulators with evidence that common additives in the drinks, such as guarana, taurine and ginseng, are safe when combined with other ingredients.

A federal report last year called energy-drink consumption a rising public health concern because excessive caffeine intake can cause medical and behavioral issues. Emergency-room visits related to energy drinks jumped from 1,128 in 2005 to 13,114 in 2009, according to the report by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

The FDA spokeswoman said the agency is looking into the "emerging science" on a variety of ingredients, including caffeine.

In the lawsuit filed last week, Wendy Crossland and Richard Fournier said their daughter had consumed two 24-ounce Monster energy drinks in a 24-hour period in December. A few hours after drinking the second can of Monster, Anais Fournier went into cardiac arrest and never regained consciousness, according to the suit. Her autopsy report attributed her death to "cardiac arrhythmia due to caffeine toxicity."

The family alleges that Monster fails to warn consumers about the potential risks related to its drinks.

"The downsides are not printed anywhere on these cans," said Alexander R. Wheeler, a Los Angeles attorney representing Anais' parents. "Her parents want to make sure this never happens to another family."

A spokesman for Monster said the company's "ingredients and labeling are in full compliance with all laws and regulations governing beverage products in each of the more than 70 countries in which it is sold."

Hey Facebook, Twitter is testing its own ?Like? button (and changing ?favorites? to ?Stars?)

Twitter has started rolling out changes to a select number of users today, including a new ?Like? button and a rebranded ?favorite? button that the company is now calling the ?Star? button.

A sprinkling of Twitter users have posted screenshots about the new Like and Star buttons, but the company hasn?t made an official announcement about them.

The features are very similar to some of the core mechanics of Facebook, which has always encouraged its users to ?Like? and share updates from friends. My guess is that Twitter wants to put more of an emphasis on its new activities stream, which currently shows you recent people who?ve followed you, liked your Tweets, or retweeted something you said. And with more users liking and ?starring? tweets, that stream could expand to show the collective activity from everyone you follow.

The new buttons would also probably bring Twitter closer to the?improved search and discovery it?s been targeting, as VentureBeat previously reported.

We?re reaching out to Twitter for official confirmation about the new buttons and to find out when it plans to roll out this update to all users. We?ll update this post with any new information.

Asian stocks mixed after US earnings disappoint

(AP) ? Asian stock markets were mixed Monday in response to disappointing U.S. corporate earnings last week.

The results from Wall Street giants Microsoft, General Electric and McDonald's took traders by surprise and caused U.S. stocks to finish substantially lower on Friday. Investors in Asia saw little reason to go against the flow.

"The U.S. market had a significant drop," said Linus Yip, strategist at First Shanghai Securities in Hong Kong. "A significant drop in the U.S. will have an impact on Asian markets as a whole."

Still, investment sentiment didn't plunge in Asia as it did in the U.S., where investors were unnerved by McDonald's shrinking profits and Microsoft's sagging PC sales.

Japan's Nikkei 225 rose 0.2 percent to 9,021.31, brushing off a widening trade deficit. Exports plummeted 10 percent from a year earlier, hurt by financial and debt problems in Europe, and a surge in anti-Japanese sentiment in China.

In September, a territorial dispute with China over disputed islands in the East China Sea sparked anti-Japanese riots. In the aftermath, exports to China sank 14 percent from a year.

South Korea's Kospi lost 0.3 percent to 1,937.67 and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 dropped 0.6 percent to 4,542.60. Benchmarks in mainland China, Singapore, Thailand and Taiwan also fell. Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 0.2 percent to 21,592.61.

Yip said that "hot money," or short-term speculative inflows, being funneled into Hong Kong are helping to support its stock market. The money is coming from investors who believe that mainland China's slowdown has bottomed out and will start to pick up stream in the final quarter of the year.

Markets may stay subdued ahead of the release later in the week of U.S. data including monthly new home sales, durable goods orders and third-quarter GDP figures, some analysts said. The upcoming U.S. presidential election and developments in the Europe debt crisis also added uncertainty to the mix.

Traders also awaited a slew of corporate earnings from U.S., including Yahoo Inc. and Texas Instruments Inc.

In Myanmar, only sickest HIV patients get drugs

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) ? Thein Aung has been trained not to show weakness, but he's convinced no soldier is strong enough for this.

He clenches his jaw and pauses, trying to will his chin to stop quivering and his eyes not to blink. But he's like a mountain that is crumbling. His shoulders shake, then collapse inward, and he suddenly seems small in the denim Wrangler shirt that's rolled up to his elbows and hanging loosely off his skinny arms. Big tears drip from his reddened eyes, and he looks away, ashamed.

As he sits outside a crowded clinic on the outskirts of Myanmar's biggest city, he knows his body is struggling to fight HIV, tuberculosis and diabetes ? but he can't help wishing he was sicker.

Although Aung is ill enough to qualify for HIV treatment in other poor countries, there's simply not enough pills to go around in Myanmar. Only the sickest of the sick are lucky enough to go home with a supply of lifesaving medicine here. The others soon learn their fate is ultimately decided by the number of infection-fighting cells found inside the blood samples they give every three months.

The World Health Organization recommends treatment start when this all-important CD4 count drops to 350.

In Myanmar, it must fall below 150.

____

Antiretroviral therapy, in the past considered a miracle only available to HIV patients in the West, is no longer scarce in many of the poorest parts of the world. Pills are cheaper and easier to access, and HIV is not the same killer that once left thousands of orphaned children in sub-Saharan Africa.

But Myanmar, otherwise known as Burma, remains a special case. Kept in the dark for so many decades by its reclusive ruling junta, this country of 60 million did not reap the same international aid as other needy nations. Heavy economic sanctions levied by countries such as the United States, along with virtually nonexistent government health funding, left an empty hole for medicine and services. Today, Myanmar ranks among the world's hardest places to get HIV care, and health experts warn it will take years to prop up a broken health system hobbled by decades of neglect.

"Burma is like the work that I did in Africa in the'90s. It's 15, 20 years out of date," says Dr. Chris Beyrer, an HIV expert at Johns Hopkins University who has worked in Myanmar for years. "If you actually tried to treat AIDS, you'd have to say that everybody with every other condition is going to die unless there are more resources."

Of the estimated 240,000 people living with HIV, half are going without treatment. And some 18,000 people die from the disease every year, according to UNAIDS.

The problem worsened last year after the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria canceled a round of funding due to a lack of international donations. The money was expected to provide HIV drugs for 46,500 people.

But as Myanmar wows the world with its reforms, the U.S. and other nations are easing sanctions. The Global Fund recently urged Myanmar to apply for more assistance that would make up the shortfall and open the door for HIV drugs to reach more than 75 percent of those in need by the end of 2015. It would also fight tuberculosis, a major killer of HIV patients. TB in Myanmar is at nearly triple the global rate as multi-drug resistant forms of the disease surge.

The aid group Doctors Without Borders has tried to take up the slack by providing more than half the HIV drugs being distributed. But every day, physicians at its 23 clinics must make agonizing decisions to turn away patients like Aung, who are desperately ill but still do not qualify for medicine because their CD4 counts are too high.

"It's very difficult to see those kind of situations," says Kyaw Naing Htun, a young doctor with a K-pop hairstyle and seemingly endless energy, who manages the organization's busy clinic in Insein. He says about 100 patients who should be on drugs are turned away every month in Yangon alone. "It takes a lot more resources when they come back sicker. It's a lose-lose game."

____

Aung first learned about the virus living inside him in April. He had dropped weight and wasn't sleeping well, but figured it was the TB and diabetes running him down.

When the test came back positive for HIV, he was shocked and scared: How? Why?

"I wanted to commit suicide when I found out the results," he says softly, looking away. "What upset me most was my wife. She says I shouldn't die now because we have children."

The questions swarmed and consumed him, followed by a flood of worry and guilt that he had possibly infected his spouse. Then the bigger concern: What's next?

Unlike many living in a country closed off to the world for the past half century of military rule, Aung, an Army staff sergeant, had some firsthand knowledge about HIV.

He had watched the disease rot one soldier from the inside out, punishing him with a cruel death. But he also saw another get on treatment and live a normal life, despite the military kicking him out.

With the images of those two men locked in his head, Aung decided to fight to save himself and ultimately his family. No one but his wife could know, or he would lose his job and their home on the military base because of the deep fear and discrimination surrounding the disease. Drugs were his only chance to keep the secret.

"If I get the medicine, and I can stay in this life longer, I will serve the country more and my family will not be broken," he says. "My family is invaluable."

At the clinic in Insein, an area of Yangon better known for a notorious prison, Aung, who is using another name to protect his identity, waited nervously for the results of his first blood test.

CD4 count: 460. Low enough for drugs in the U.S., but well above the 150 cutoff in Myanmar. He was given TB meds and told to come back in three months.

____

Many of the 200 people crammed into the two small buildings of an HIV center just outside Yangon are simply waiting to die.

Beloved opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi visited patients there in November 2010, just days after being freed from house arrest, appealing to the world for more medicine. She also spoke passionately in July about the stigma of HIV via a video link to the International AIDS conference in Washington, saying, "Our people need to understand what HIV really is. We need to understand this is not something that we need to be afraid of."

There are no doctors or nurses stationed at the hospice supported by Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy party, forcing patients to care for each other. One man hangs a drip bag on a plastic string from the ceiling over an emaciated body. Other caregivers ? many of whom are also infected ? wave paper fans beside their loved ones for hours, providing the only relief they can offer.

Infected children whose parents have already passed away play barefoot in the stuffy, crowded rooms. Bodies, some nothing more than breathing corpses, are stacked side by side on bamboo slats above dirt floors.

Another room is packed with 20 women stretched out on straw mats crisscrossing the wooden floor. A young mother sobs in one corner as she breast-feeds a 7-day-old baby girl. She did not take HIV drugs until late in her pregnancy, and now must wait up to 18 months to know for sure whether her only child is infected.

"The funding is limited for the enormous number of patients," says newly elected parliament member Phyu Phyu Thin, who founded the center in 2002 and was jailed by the former government for her HIV work. "Waiting to get the medicine under the limits is too risky for many patients because they can only get it when their health is deteriorating."

____

Aung looks the part of a soldier with his shaved head and wiry build. He spent the first decade of his 27 years in the military fighting in domestic ethnic wars, away from his wife and two children.

It's this past life that devours him each night when sleep refuses to come. He served as a medic then, and regularly came into contact with the blood of wounded soldiers. He also had sex with other women. The question that haunts him most is, which one is to blame? He'll never know.

He takes sleeping pills every night to be released from these thoughts. But relief does not come, as chills and night sweats drench his body and the constant urge to urinate keeps him running to the toilet.

He's lost 10 pounds in the past month, dropping from 130 pounds to 120. His cheeks are starting to sink, and his eyes look hollow. His strength is also fading, and he can no longer lead grueling daily runs with the trainees. He uses his TB as an excuse, but he fears his superiors will not be fooled much longer.

"I try to hide it as much as I can, but some people have started rumors about me, so I try not to face them directly," he says. "I want to be strong like the other people. I'm trying, but now my body cannot follow my mind."

His wife refuses to be tested until Aung gets on the drugs. She worries that if she comes back positive, her guilt-ravaged husband will kill himself.

"She doesn't want me to be depressed," he says. "If she is positive, I will be very, very depressed."

The disease has forced him to rethink who he is. He's killed people in combat, cheated on his wife and witnessed many horrors in his lifetime. But he wants a chance to make up for his wrongs.

As a Buddhist, he believes his disease is a punishment for misdeeds in a previous life. He vows to be a better man by helping others and giving what little he has to charity.

He says sicker patients deserve treatment first. Still, as he sits waiting for his second blood test, he can't help wishing his immune system was weak enough to help him reach the magic number.

But when the doctor reads his results, he knows he will leave empty-handed again.

CD4 count: 289. Still too high.

His only choice is to try again in three months, hoping he'll be sick enough then.

The Spammer

The Spammer

I Hate SPAM

I am one of those people who absolutely detest SPAM. Spammers are unscrupulous, dishonest people too dumb to use proper Internet Marketing techniques. For me, annoyance turned to disgust when a genealogy forum I created became inundated daily with spammers, including porn. Every day, I removed the spam only to have it show up the next day. Finally, I tracked it down to a company called SEO Profiler who spread their client?s garbage wherever they could over the internet. I had to threaten them with a lawsuit before they would stop.

The laws that finally came into effect regarding spamming saw a rise in the hijacking of someone?s email address so that they could use that email address and not be subject to the law. Many of us have had to change our email address due to this.

How do spammers get our email address?

There are email address spiders that search the web and harvest a list of victim's email addresses that they find in various places. Another method is to send out ?tribute? and ?inspirational? emails. ?If you respect our troops?, ?if you love Jesus?, ?if you are my friend?, ?if you hate bullies?, etc., send this on or send it back to me to show you care.

How to prevent your email address being hijacked

I know that pretty well every one of you have friends or loved ones that are simply not very internet savvy. If you send some of these folks jokes or cool things to watch, there is a good chance that they will forward your email to others. That is fine but they often simply click on the forward and send it on to their friends, leaving your email address showing. It is just a matter of time before your email will become hijacked and thousands of people will be receiving spam emails, supposedly from you.

I try my best to prevent this in these ways.

First, I go over the email I intend to forward, making sure that any email address showing is deleted.

Secondly, I use BCC (Blind Carbon Copy) method to select recipients. That creates a single address of undisclosedrecipients@........com instead of individual personal email addresses. There is nothing to harvest.

Lastly, I put the following as an automatic signature on each email.

Thank you for deleting my email address & personal history before you forward it.

Thank you for using BCC (Blind Carbon Copy) instead of "To" and "CC" when sending group e-mails. This helps prevent SPAM & hackers.

Example of a real Spammer

I received a SPAM this email morning. The creep used my friend's email address to disseminate it and it was just a single link to a "Raspberry Drops" SPAM web site. The spammer had used a copy of the Fox News website to try to fool people into thinking they had published the article. This incredibly intelligent person left the O out of the web address to pretend it is from Fox. When you go down the page and try to leave a comment, of course, it does not work and more than the raspberry drops would. Also, each of the links at the top go to a "buy my raspberry crap" page.

Not long ago, I switched to Gmail and found it to be very good at detecting and preventing SPAM. If a SPAM email does get through, click on the ?mark as SPAM? and everyone else on Gmail will be protected in the future from this same email.

There is a never ending list of trolls, thieves and unscrupulous people out there on the web. So, protect yourself and others as much as you can.

Wisconsin Pride

U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) waves on stage during the final day of the Democratic National Convention.

Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wi.), candidate for U.S. Senate

MADISON, Wis.?Tammy Baldwin is 16 minutes early. The campaign office is already almost full of people who want to meet their candidate for U.S. Senate. Thirty-odd student volunteers, most of them from the University of Wisconsin, sit in chairs and against the walls, decorated by handmade charts that show how many doors they?ve knocked on, by 8 x 11 print-outs of Joe Biden quotes, by a whiteboard decorated with the Obama ?O? logo and an inspirational message.

SMILE! You work for the President + Tammy!

Baldwin has represented this college town in Congress for 14 years, coming there from the state Assembly, coming to the Assembly from the Dane County Board of Supervisors. The locals swear that Baldwin has a photographic memory for voters. I introduce myself. ?We met in the student organizing center during the Capitol protests!? she says. ?I remember it vividly.? She?s right. I?m inclined to believe the locals.

It?s three weeks before the election and Baldwin?s narrowly winning a race she was supposed to lose. The Wisconsin seat is being vacated by Democrat Herb Kohl, an elfin retail-store tycoon who funded his own campaigns with the slogan ?Nobody?s Senator but Yours.? (Republicans liked to shorten that to ?Nobody?s Senator.?) The Republican candidate is Tommy Thompson, who won his first election in 1966, and won a fourth and final term as governor in 1998 by a 21-point landslide before becoming George W. Bush?s secretary of Health and Human Services. Six months ago, most projections of a GOP Senate takeover assumed that Thompson would defeat the liberal congresswoman from Madison.

?It?s a closer race than I would have hoped for,? says Sen. Ron Johnson, the Republican who beat Russ Feingold in the 2010 wave. ?The polls show Tammy Baldwin ahead, and I don?t think anybody was expecting that.?

Thompson is 70 years old and looks it, and has adapted to the YouTube/Twitter era of campaigns with all the grace of Bobby Knight after a foul call. Baldwin is a natural. She?s also a lesbian. And nobody in Wisconsin thinks that?s hurt her. Scott Walker?s state may elect the first openly gay senator in American history, and it?s a total nonissue. It might even be helping Baldwin.

In my long weekend canvass of Wisconsin, I utterly failed to find any voters who factored Baldwin?s sexual preference into their votes. In a state that gave a 59 percent ?yes? vote to a 2006 gay marriage ban, there?s no palpable backlash against a well-known gay candidate.

?I don?t think the people of Wisconsin discriminate against anybody, but I think we also hold the traditional view that marriage is between a man and a woman,? says Johnson. ?I don?t find that contradictory at all. I?d favor civil unions. I have no problem with that.?

At a rally with Joe Biden in La Crosse, retirees Howard and Bernita Sheehan sounded surprised that anybody might ask the question. ?It doesn?t come up anymore,? said Bernita. ?People have gotten to know gay people. And we have Ellen Degeneres on TV. We have Rachel Maddow.?

Howard felt the same way. He, too, had probably softened his views on gays and gay rights as he got older. ?Personally, I don?t care for that gay marriage,? he said. ?But that being said, why should I force my viewpoints on other people??

Democrats, generally, were happy to answer the question but wondered why it was being asked. Republicans simply didn?t know why it might matter. ?The person she?s hoping to replace is also of the same persuasion,? says Joyce Smith, a Thompson voter and volunteer in Racine. ?I don?t think that matters.? Although it has often been rumored, Sen. Kohl has never claimed to be gay. He even voted for the Defense of Marriage Act. Baldwin?s been out for her entire political career.

In 1998, the year Baldwin won her House seat, the openly gay Marc Pocan ran for her Assembly seat. Two strange games on deck for US women

With no professional league nearby (yet), women?s soccer fans will take any opportunity they can get to catch the likes of Alex Morgan and Abby Wambach in action. That their opponent tonight at Toyota Park will include Celia Okoyino da Mbabi, Simone Laudehr, Melanie Behringer, and Martina M?ller makes this more than a typical U.S. Women?s National Team friendly. Germany is a full-on rival, albeit one that?s in a strange state.

Until the summer of 2011, Germany (having won the 2003 and 2007 World Cups) had been one of the two undisputed powers in women?s soccer. When (last year) they lost in the quarterfinals of their own World Cup,?die Nationalelf?began a period of surprise insignificance. Not only had they made an early exit at the tournament they were favored to win (losing to a Japan team that had failed to make an impact at previous World Cups), their disappointing result meant they?d miss the 2012 Summer Olympics tournament.

In their place, Japan has emerged, France has flattered yet deceived, while Sweden and Canada have been threats. The bipolar world of 2010 ? of Germany, U.S.-dominance with a splash of Brazil ? has given way to a new era of women?s international soccer. The landscape is maturing and broadening, and it?s still unclear where Germany will fit in.

These next two games against the States (tonight?s and Tuesday?s in Hartford) should remind the world of Germany?s talent. The team is still ranked second by FIFA, and if they have slipped in stature (a debatable claim) it?s more because of the strange method UEFA uses for Olympic qualifying (the World Cup results) rather than the team?s actual quality. Had Europe waged a true qualifying tournament ahead of London, Germany?s results would likely look like their just-ended Euro 2013 qualifying campaign. There they went 9-0-1, scoring 64 goals and allowing only three while qualifying for Sweden 2013.

That team comes to the U.S. to find their rivals in a state of flux. The States are without a permanent coach, Pia Sundhage having retired after three wins in September. Jillian Ellis is serving in an interim capacity, with U.S. Soccer still evaluating candidates for the permanent job.

Though the U.S. have called in a full squad for the Germany matches, it?s unclear the matches will mean anything. Win, lose or draw, there?ll be a new coach soon, somebody who will likely bring in a new plan ahead of Canada 2015. Given the age of some of the States? key parts, that plan could change half the starting lineup. Add in the weird realities of the women?s international calendar (the U.S.?s next major competition is still three years away), this week?s matches may be the least significant meetings imaginable between world numbers one and two.

But such is the state of women?s soccer in the U.S. We take what we can get. It?s not like tonight?s match is distracting us from a domestic league. If Alex and Abby are in action, we?ll watch. At least they?re playing Germany this time.

EU leaders call Mali crisis a threat to Europe

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - EU leaders said on Friday the crisis in Mali, where Islamists have seized control of much of the north of the country, was an "immediate threat" to Europe, and threatened to impose sanctions on the armed militia there.

It was the first time EU heads of state and government had pronounced collectively on the crisis, which broke out in March when soldiers toppled the president, leaving a power vacuum that enabled Tuareg rebels to take control of the north. Islamists, some allied with al Qaeda, have since hijacked their revolt.

"This situation poses an immediate threat to the Sahel region as well as to West and North Africa and to Europe," EU leaders said in a statement after a summit in Brussels on Friday.

EU foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton said this week "terrorists and drug traffickers" might have a free hand in Mali unless the government regained control.

Regional leaders and international organizations were meeting on Friday in Mali's capital Bamako to discuss whether the Islamists should be dislodged by military intervention or a more gradual political approach.

The United Nations Security Council last week gave African leaders 45 days to draw up a plan for military intervention to retake control of the north.

France, Mali's former colonial ruler, has six hostages held by the Islamists, and has been pushing hard for military action.

French President Francois Hollande is said to believe there is a risk that al Qaeda's North African arm, AQIM, is cementing its base in the West African state, creating a launch pad for an attack on French soil.

Diplomatic and security sources say there is "credible" evidence of planned attacks following botched bombings by AQIM at French embassies in Mali and Mauritania.

However, diplomats say that foreign military intervention in Mali is months away.

The European Union will step up its humanitarian response to the crisis, and examine support for the envisaged international military force, said Friday's statement by the European Council, which represents EU member states.

"The EU will maintain the option to adopt targeted restrictive measures against those involved in the armed groups in northern Mali and those hindering the return to constitutional order," the statement said.
